Power
Saving Tips
A
baby increases your power demands
here are ways to reduce your
consumption
As
a responsible parent it is imperative, for our planet's health and
viability, that you make concious efforts to reduce the amount of power
you consume. Having children increases your demands for power, and
green energy is not available in most communities. Adopting eco
friendly living habits such as these will significantly improve your
environmental impact and also reduce your utilities bills!
Here are some great tips:
- Reduce
the number of
dishwasher and clothes washer/dryer loads. As
you probably know, these appliances can run
for up to an hour per load and they are chewing through voltage the
whole time.
Also see the kitchen and laundry reduction tips listed in the water saving tips
page.
- Use
less hot water: A
lot of power
and/or gas is needed to run your hot water heater. Smaller tub sizes
for your
baby and shorter showers for mum and dad make a huge difference. Also,
wash your clothes with cold or warm water, instead of hot.
- Lower
your thermostat
a few degrees. We
know it is important that mother and baby are comfortable, but at least
turn
down the thermostat to about 68ºF /
20ºC.
Just lowering your
temperature a couple of degrees makes a big difference in the short,
and long,
run. (If you live in a hot climate, you of course understand that
raising your
temp a few degrees, to keep the air conditioner running lighter
conserves a lot
of energy.)
- Turn
off the lights
and appliances: Turn
them off when you are not using them, and try to reduce the number of
times
that you turn them on. Turn the television off more often and open more
children’s books. Your baby will be all the smarter for it!
